The reefer racks were placed on the 167 hectares terminal which can expand to a final capacity of about 4,5 million TEUs. The most common containers are 2 TEUs which are used for transport by container vessels and trucks.

In 2013, Voortman Steel Construction supplied and mounted 60 reefer racks for the APM Terminals on Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Voortman’s activities included civil and electrotechnical work. Voortman was assigned by construction combination TigeR, consisting of GMB, Dura Vermeer and Imtech. As a result of the successful completion Voortman Steel Construction was assigned once again for the realisation of another 20 reefer racks.
The objective of a reefer rack is to provide stacked reefer containers (refrigerated containers) with power in a safe and easy way. A basic design of a reefer rack consists of a main structure with various floors, executed with platforms. Fencing is mounted all around the floors, which can be reached through a staircase.
Reefer safety tunnels
The objective of a reefer safety tunnel is to provide safe access to the reefer racks. In this way, personnel of the container terminal does not have to cross the stacking area, where unsafe situations may occur.
