EPO New Main
Voortman Steel Construction co-constructed the building New Hinge, an annexe of the new office building for the European Patent Office (EPO) in Rijswijk (NL). The assignment came from construction company J.P. van Eesteren, which is together with Croonwolter & Dros responsible for the construction of the new office building. The EPO, with its headquarters in Munich, Germany, has several branches in Europe. The new office in Rijswijk is built on its current location.

The New Hinge building has three floors. The 800 tonnes steel structure contains assembled cross columns of no less than 10 tons each. Since the construction was carried out at a so-called stamp location, there was no space for the cranes immediately next to the construction. Therefore special cranes were used, which could be located at a considerable distance from the construction site.
The limited space on the construction site also had consequences for the logistics: loads had to be delivered on site just in time. The short lead time for this project was an additional challenge: assembly started only six weeks after the order was placed. A remarkable detail is that the steel structure, which is ultimately completely concealed, has the corporate colours of J.P. van Eesteren, green and purple.
