In cooperation with engineering office Witteveen + Bos, Voortman Steel Construction realised reefer racks for DP World at Antwerp Gateway. With more than 65 terminals on six continents, DP World is one of the largest terminal operators in the world. Its head office is located in Dubai (U.A.E.).
The assignment was the realisation of 15 galvanized reefer racks, 12 reefer safety tunnels and 4 high-mast lightings, height 30 metres. A reefer rack consists of a steel structure with several floors. The floors consist of a total of approximately 2,000 m2 grid floors and 3.5 kilometres of fencing. In the stacking area 27 gates have been placed, covered with wire mesh.
Nick Panneels, Manager Civil Works at DP World: “In close collaboration with DP World and the other contractors on site, Voortman Steel Construction has delivered a qualitatively strong final result.”
Reefer racks
The objective of a reefer rack is to provide stacked reefer containers (refrigerated containers) with power in a safe and easy way. A basic design of a reefer rack consists of a main structure with various floors, executed with platforms. Fencing is mounted all around the floors, which can be reached through a staircase.
Reefer safety tunnels
The objective of a reefer safety tunnel is to provide safe access to the reefer racks. In this way, personnel of the container terminal does not have to cross the stacking area, where unsafe situations may occur.
